Celtic legend Jackie McNamara has insisted that the Bhoys can do without a replacement for Moussa Dembele for the remainder of the season and still remain in contention for trophies.

Dembele joined Ligue 1 outfit Lyon on transfer deadline day for a fee worth around £20m after becoming unsettled in Glasgow due to the interest from his homeland.

The 22-year-old was the subject of bids, notably from Marseille and Lyon in France, during the summer transfer window and Celtic’s decision to cash-in on him did not come as shock due to Dembele’s desire to seek greener pastures.

The late departure of Dembele meant that Brendan Rodgers was left with too little time to find an ideal replacement, but the fact that Celtic have strengthened the striking department does not concern McNamara.

The former Celtic icon commented that the Bhoys can still compete for major honours this season without strengthening their ranks following the departure of Dembele.

“Selling Dembele is a fantastic piece of business for Celtic”, McNamara told the Evening Times.

“They have spent £9 million on Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths is there as well. They can't play three strikers in one game can they?

"I haven't seen enough of the lad Lewis Morgan but he is highly rated and they also have Scott Sinclair there who hasn't featured a lot this season.

"I think that Celtic don't need to replace Dembele this season as they still have enough quality in the forward areas to win trophies and to continue being successful and doing well”, he added.

Celtic secured victories over FK Suduva and Rangers in their last two outings respectively without the services of Dembele and are already getting used to life without him.
