Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has advised Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford to stay put at Old Trafford and wait for his opportunity as he believes Jose Mourinho will not last too much longer at the club.

Rashford, who was sent off during the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Burnley before the international break, continued his goalscoring form for England when he scored the only goal in their 1-0 win over Switzerland on Tuesday night.

The Manchester United academy graduate scored the Three Lions’ opening goal during their 2-1 loss at Wembley to Spain in the UEFA Nations League  to emerge as a lethal weapon for Gareth Southgate during the round of fixtures.

Rashford is finding it difficult to nail down a regular first team role under Mourinho this season and has been restricted to 121 minutes of playing time during his three appearances so far in the Premier League.

Nicol, who spent over a decade at Liverpool during the club's glory days, offered his take on the situation at Old Trafford by commenting that Rashford should stay put at Old Trafford and wait for the new manager as he thinks Mourinho will not last for much longer in his job.

“I would have to tell him to bide his time right now. Mourinho doesn’t stay anywhere too long”, Nicol said on ESPN FC.

“He’s not starting ahead of [Romelu] Lukaku, he’s not starting ahead of [Alexis] Sanchez either.

"That means that if he plays at all, he plays wide.

“And one thing he’s shown us when he plays through the middle, he gives defences a headache.

"I don’t think Mourinho is going to last too much longer at Manchester United.

“A different manager, a different coach, a different way of looking at the game would maybe prefer Rashford through the middle to Lukaku”, he concluded.

Rashford will not be available for the next three Manchester United games as a red card for violent conduct automatically results in a three-match ban.
