St Mirren head coach Oran Kearney has admitted that the Buddies need the backing of their fans if they are to cause an upset against champions Celtic on Friday.

Kearney’s men will host the Scottish champions on Friday night when the Premiership returns after the international break as the Buddies aim to put the disappointment of losing to Hearts behind them.

St Mirren have struggled to build on their win over Dundee during the opening weekend and have been outplayed by all of Rangers, Livingston and Hearts, respectively.

The Buddies have conceded 10 goals in their last three outings, while only managing to find the back of the net once during their most recent game, against league leaders Hearts.

Kearney, who replaced former manager Alan Stubbs, has admitted that his side will need a lot of support from the fans if they are to get a positive result against Celtic on Friday.

“They can be our twelfth man and it’s so important that they get behind the players from the word go. I appreciate it”, Kearney told the club’s official channel.

“It’s been a rugged start, but on the same stretch, in games like these here it’s so important that we hear them and they make it as intimidating an atmosphere as possible”, he added.

St Mirren are currently second from bottom in the Premiership with just three points from a possible 12 so far this season.
