Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that comparing Joe Gomez to Rio Ferdinand is massively premature and over the top, considering that it is still only early days for the Reds defender.

Gomez, who has established himself at the heart of Liverpool’s defence during the absence of Dejan Lovren, earned a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad during the international break.

The defender has struck up a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk for Jurgen Klopp’s men, helping Liverpool maintain a 100 per cent start to the season, while conceding just a solitary goal against Leicester City in their last outing.

The 21-year-old has warranted praise from all corners due to his sublime start to the season and he could retain his place in the starting eleven for Saturday’s clash against Tottenham.

Carragher, who spent his entire career at Liverpool becoming one of the finest defenders the club have ever produced, claims that it is too early to compare Gomez to the likes of Ferdinand.

“Although he played at right-back a year ago, since assuming his favoured position Gomez has been likened to Bobby Moore and Rio Ferdinand”, Carragher wrote in his column for the Telegraph.

“This is stupidly premature, over the top praise.

“Gomez could become a top player, but to get there he will need to overcome sterner tests than Selhurst Park and the King Power Stadium”, he added.

Liverpool are one of three clubs to have won all four of their opening games in the Premier League so far this season and are leading the pack ahead of Chelsea and Watford on goal difference.
