Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon has laughed off Harry Winks being compared to the legendary Paul Gascoigne after seeing the youngster in action for Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino chose to start Winks for the visit of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in the Premier League.

But Spurs were poor and went down to a 2-1 defeat, only scoring their consolation in injury time through Erik Lamela.

Pochettino left Winks on for 73 minutes before he replaced him with Heung-Min Son and McMahon saw enough to judge the 22-year-old physically weak.

"Winks, they are talking about the new Gazza – get a life!" McMahon said on LFC TV.

"He is weak. Physically weak."

Winks is highly rated by Tottenham boss Pochettino and is still feeling his way back from a lengthy injury layoff.

Pochettino brought him off the bench in games against Fulham, Manchester United and Watford, with Liverpool being Winks' first start for Spurs of the current campaign.

He is under contract at White Hart Lane until 2023.
