Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has praised Olivier Giroud for his performance on Saturday and revealed that he will look to use both Alvaro Morata and the Frenchman depending on the nature of the match over the course of the season.

Giroud, who made his first ever start under Sarri against newly promoted Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, played a crucial role in Chelsea’s opening goals during their 4-1 win over Neil Warnock’s side.

The Frenchman combined effectively with Eden Hazard, who netted his second hat-trick in a Chelsea shirt against the Bluebirds, for his first two goals that came within the space of seven minutes towards the end of the first half.

Sarri, who opted to start with Morata in the first four games, admitted that he felt Giroud was more suitable to lead the attack against Cardiff on Saturday.

“On Saturday Oliver played very well. Without scoring but he was very useful for his team-mates”, Sarri told the club’s official website.

The Italian also suggested that he is aiming to use both Morata and Giroud over the course of the lengthy season depending on the nature of the opposition every week.

“In the last two weeks I have seen four matches of Cardiff and four matches of PAOK Salonika [our next opponents] and I thought Giroud was more suitable for the Cardiff match and Morata for the other.

“So I don’t know who will be the striker of the future but I think both because we have to play 60 matches.

“In characteristics they are different and it depends on the kind of match”, he added.

Chelsea maintained their flawless start to the season with their comeback win over Cardiff on Saturday and are currently leading the pack ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.
