Former Nottingham Forest assistant David Weir has revealed that his ex-boss Mark Warburton came close to signing Connor Goldson in December last year, but the deal eventually fell through, with the player signing for Rangers in the summer.

The Gers snapped up 25-year-old on a four-year deal from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer for an undisclosed fee and he has shone next to Nikola Katic at Ibrox.

Weir, who worked under Warburton at Rangers and then at Nottingham Forest before the duo were sacked in December, revealed that the 56-year-old manager was keen on Goldson.

The 48-year-old insists that it came as a surprise to him that Brighton decided to sell the player in whose future they were very much interested.

“Mark and I were actually very close to signing Connor Goldson for Forest”, Weir was quoted as saying by Nottingham Post.

“It was well down the line, we really liked him.

“I was really surprised that Brighton let him go permanently, but when I spoke to people there it was because they wanted him to play and be a success in his own right.

“They wanted to see him prosper, and he’s doing that.”

Goldson has been influential for Gerrard's side so far, managing four league and eight Europa League qualifying matches, even going on to add to the scoresheet twice.
