Jurgen Klopp spent hours trying to convince Kylian Mbappe to join Liverpool last year, but the Reds could not match the money on offer from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe joined PSG on loan from Monaco last year and the move was made permanent this year for a transfer fee of €180m, the striker becoming the second most expensive player in the world.

The Frenchman rejected a move to Manchester City and even had a meeting with Arsene Wenger over potentially joining Arsenal before heading to the French capital of Paris.

And it has been claimed that Mbappe also came close to joining Liverpool as according to French sports daily L’Equipe, Klopp had an extensive meeting with the player and his entourage last year.

The Liverpool manager promised to make the striker the centre-piece of his project at Anfield and even offered him a contract which was equal to the amount Phillippe Coutinho was earning at the moment.

Mbappe and his entourage were charmed by the project on offer at Anfield and Liverpool were even prepared to offer the money Monaco were demanding for him initially.

But the goalposts shifted radically following Neymar’s move to PSG and Monaco recalibrated their financial demands for the striker's transfer.

Liverpool eventually backed out as they were not going to compete with the money PSG and Real Madrid were prepared to offer in terms of a transfer fee.
