Former Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has insisted Germany coach Joachim Low will need to question himself to get his side over their World Cup disappointment, but stressed that he will not need anyone from outside to tell him what to do.

Low has been under pressure since Germany bungled their World Cup defence and crashed out of the competition in the group stage in the summer.

The Germany FA decided to stick to their World Cup-winning coach, but he has attracted criticism, with former national team captain Philipp Lahm criticising Low’s methods.

Mertesacker insisted that the 58-year-old does not need anyone telling him what to do and taking potshots at his leadership style.

However, he understands that Germany are going through a tough phase and Low is intelligent enough to question himself and try and get his team out of their current rut.

“Low doesn’t need anyone to tell him anything or comment on his leadership style”, the former Germany defender told Spox.

“He is an ambitious guy and rethinks his style himself regardless of any advice

“And after years of good luck, Low will need to pull himself out of out his unsuccessful situation by asking a lot of questions of himself.”

Germany played out a goalless draw with France and narrowly beat Peru during the international break earlier this month.
