Former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Jerome Rothen believes Jurgen Klopp played a key role in getting Jordan Henderson’s career back on track, with the Liverpool star initially trying to emulate club legend Steven Gerrard.

Henderson is the club captain at Anfield and was a key part of the Liverpool side that made it to the Champions League final last season, where they eventually lost to Real Madrid.

The midfielder has had his detractors both for Liverpool and England and many believe that he is still not good enough to command the midfield for either club or country.

However, ahead of Liverpool’s clash against PSG, Rothen has included the midfielder in a combined eleven and feels Klopp played a role in getting Henderson back on track.

The former PSG man feels the midfielder was trying too hard to emulate Steven Gerrard but under Klopp, he has found his groove and has developed as a midfielder.

Rothen told French sports daily L’Equipe: “He’s a player I was reluctant to start with.

“He wanted to look like Steven Gerrard and was struggling. Klopp did him some good and of course he worked hard.

“He is always available to receive a pass, is good in duels, knows how to create passes that hurt and he also gets on the scoresheet sometimes.

“He will be essential as PSG have concerns in their midfield.”

It remains to be seen whether Henderson gets the nod to start when Liverpool host PSG at Anfield tonight.
