Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio’s agent has confirmed that there was significant interest from Roma before the Spaniard decided to join Real Madrid in 2014.

Horacio Gaggioli has revealed that his client was strongly wanted by Roma, before the Los Blancos agreed on a deal to bring him to the Bernabeu from Mallorca.

Asensio has quickly established himself as one of the most highly-rated forwards in Europe since making the most of his chance at Real Madrid and he is expected to take up a prominent role this season following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Gaggioli went on to confirm that he even flew to Rome in order to discuss a potential move for Asensio, who had caught the eye of Roma with his performances in Spain with Mallorca.

However, the move failed to materialise and Asensio made the switch to Real Madrid in a move that helped him win a whopping eight trophies in two years with the club.

“It is true that the Giallorossi looked at him before Real Madrid called”, Gaggioli was quoted as saying on Italian daily Il Romanista.

“I also went to Rome”, he added.

Roma and Real Madrid find themselves in the same Champions League group this season.
