Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has claimed that the Reds' 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain will provide Jurgen Klopp’s men with the belief that they can go on a run to the Champions League final once again.

The Reds secured all three points in their Champions League opener against PSG in Group B at Anfield on Tuesday night courtesy of a stoppage time winner from Roberto Firmino.

The scoreline read 3-2 at the end of proceedings to pull down the curtains on what became a thoroughly entertaining affair for the raucous Anfield crowd during a memorable night for the club.

Klopp’s men have sent a huge warning to every other contender in Europe with the result and they look like they are in pristine condition to go a long way in the competition.

Warnock, who started his career at Anfield as a youngster and went on to represent the senior team, claimed that the result will act as a huge boost for everyone at the club as they will now believe that they can repeat the run to the final like last season.

“After going so close to winning it a few months ago, Liverpool might have needed something to give them the belief that their run to the final can happen again”, Warnock told BBC Radio 5 live.

“They got it with this performance, against a PSG side that has been built to win the Champions League and is expected to go far in the competition.

“That win was a big statement to the rest of Europe too – that Liverpool are looking to hit the same heights as last season.

“It is not guaranteed they will manage it, of course, but they have showed they still have the hunger and desire they will need”, he added.

Liverpool are currently sitting on top of Group B ahead of Napoli, Red Star Belgrade and PSG.
