Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has claimed that the Gers should play both Kyle Lafferty and Alfredo Morelos up front in order to help them strike up a prolific partnership.

Boyd, who is currently playing for Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership, recently turned out against Rangers in a Scottish League Cup game which the Gers won 3-1.

The 35-year-old enjoyed two spells with the Old Firm giants, but he will be remembered fondly for his first, in which he was the top scorer in the league on four out of five seasons he spent at the club.

Boyd enjoyed a successful partnership alongside Kenny Miller at the top for the Gers during the 2008/09 season and believes Rangers should play with two up top.

The former Scotland international also added that Lafferty and Morelos have the right attributes to strike up a golden partnership for Steven Gerrard’s men this season.

“I always feel as if a club like Rangers should have two strikers up front. They create so many chances”, Boyd told the Evening Times.

“If everything is done properly in terms of the midfield, if the midfielders are willing to run beyond the strikers and create opportunities, then I think it can be successful.

“It didn’t really work at Celtic Park, but you have to look at the big picture.

“Celtic are by far the dominant force in the country. They had lost one of their last 41 league games at home under Brendan Rodgers and that was after they had won the league.

“I think we saw at Motherwell that Lafferty and Morelos is a promising partnership.

“Kyle can come in off the left and come in off the right. Alfredo is prepared to drop into the holes and the midfielders are prepared to get forward and get beyond them then it can work out well."

Rangers will return to the group stage of a European competition after a gap of eight years when they begin their Europa League campaign at Villarreal on Thursday.
