Former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune has expressed his delight at seeing Diogo Dalot’s debut performance on Wednesday night.

The 19-year-old Portuguese full-back, who joined the club in the summer, made his debut for Manchester United in their opening Champions League group game against Young Boys in Switzerland.

The youngster was lively on both sides of the pitch and looked threatening on the flanks because of his ability to put good crosses inside the penalty box.

Jose Mourinho insisted after the game, which Manchester United won 3-0, that he was sure Dalot was ready to step up and Fortune was left astounded by the youngster’s debut.

The former midfielder feels for a youngster to come in on such an important night and look so confident in the shirt from the first minute onwards was a delight in itself.

Speaking about Dalot, Fortune said on MUTV’s Matchday Review programme: “I thought he was outstanding.

“For someone who has just come to one of the biggest clubs in the world with a knee injury and to step in on a Champions League night as a 19-year-old and to play with so much confidence, it was unbelievable.

“Hopefully he has given the manager some difficulties but yes, great performance from a young player.”

Antonio Valencia is expected to return to the eleven when Manchester United play Wolves on Saturday but Dalot has given Mourinho another option at right-back.
