Rangers legend Derek Johnstone believes Kyle Lafferty’s physicality adds something different to the attacking options at Ibrox at the moment.

Lafferty returned for a second stint at Rangers this summer from Aberdeen and scored a brace on his second league debut for the club against Motherwell last month.

The 31-year-old has not been a certain starter since his return but Steven Gerrard has stressed the importance of having a striker of his quality in and around the Rangers squad.

And Johnstone believes the striker is a good option to have in the Rangers attack and while football has changed in recent years, Lafferty’s physicality inside the penalty box is always going to be useful for the Glasgow giants.

Responding to a query on Twitter through Rangers Youth FC, the Gers legend said: “Football has changed dramatically now – it's all about balls to feet in the box. Nippy strikers.

“But there is nothing better than a ball going into the box and your big striker heading into the net.

“Kyle Lafferty can give us something like that.”

Lafferty scored 36 goals during his previous stint at the club and will be hoping to make more starts in the coming games for Gerrard’s team.
