Rangers legend Derek Johnstone believes fans should be realistic about the Gers in the Europa League and feels getting to the group stage itself has been an achievement.

Steven Gerrard has taken Rangers back to the group stage of a European competition after navigating through a long and arduous qualifying phase, which curtailed their summer break.

Rangers will open their campaign with a tough away game at Villarreal tonight, but the Gers manager has been adamant that side will compete hard against the top opponents.

However, Johnstone believes getting this far has been a huge achievement and Rangers should try to manage expectations as they have not been in Europe for a while.

He has stressed that the players should consider their experiences in the competition as a learning curve for the moment.

The Rangers legend responded through the club’s youth Twitter account when asked how far he sees the club going in the Europa League this season: “We have to be realistic, getting to the group stage was a great achievement.

“It will be a good learning curve for the players.

“Never say never.”

Rapid Vienna and Spartak Moscow are the other two clubs in Group G of the Europa League.
