Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has admitted that he is wary of the threat on offer from St Johnstone striker Tony Watt, ahead of the meeting between the two sides at Ibrox on Sunday.

The Gers came from behind twice to earn a hard fought point against Villarreal on Thursday in their Europa League opener in Spain.

The result will put a spring in their step ahead of facing St Johnstone at home on Sunday, in their bid to try and knit together a good run of results in the coming weeks.

Gerrard, who was not shy of expressing his delight with Rangers’ performance against Villarreal, admitted that his team showed tremendous character to fight back in the second half at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Thursday.

However, he insisted that it is important to pick up from where they left off against St Johnstone on Sunday and admitted that he is wary of the problems Watt can cause for the opposition defenders on his day.

“St Johnstone are doing okay and they have a good manager”, Gerrard told a press conference.

“They have a lot of energy in the team, they have a lot of midfield runners and they have a really good focal point in Watt as their number 9.

“He obviously wears a different number but you know what I mean.

“So the threat will certainly be there against St Johnstone and if we’re not at it, or we think we can turn up and second or third gear, we could face some problems", Gerrard said..

Watt has scored five goals across all competitions for Tommy Wright’s side so far this season and will be aiming to add to his tally against Rangers on Sunday.
