Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty has admitted that the Gers were always confident of getting the results against the top teams this season under Steven Gerrard.

The Light Blues opened their account in the Europa League with a hard fought 2-2 draw against Villarreal on Thursday after Gerrard’s men had to come from behind twice to rescue a point away from home.

Lafferty bagged the goal that helped Rangers snatch a point in the end after Carlos Bacca’s early goal was cancelled out by Scott Arfield before Villarreal restored their lead through Gerard Moreno.

The Northern Irishman scored in the 76th minute when he got on the end of a cross from Borna Barisic to slot the ball past Andres Fernandez in goal for the hosts.

The 31-year-old admitted that Rangers were always confident of getting a result in big games and added that they are indeed heading in the right direction under Gerrard.

“Everyone thought we could get results against some of the top teams”, Lafferty told Rangers TV.

“We got a point away from home against a team that just missed out on the Champions League and spent £70m.

“It says a lot for the lads and where we are at the minute.

"We are heading in the right direction and it is going to be exciting times for Rangers Football Club”, he added.

Lafferty has scored three goals for Rangers across all competitions so far after joining from Hearts for a second stint with the club in August.
