Phil Babb believes that Manchester United will be locked in a battle with Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal for fourth place in the Premier League, while Liverpool can look forward to a title scrap with Chelsea and Manchester City.

Former Liverpool defender Babb watched on as Jurgen Klopp's men thrashed Southampton 3-0 to maintain their 100 per cent start in the Premier League on Saturday and sit top of the pile with six wins from six games.

Chelsea and Manchester City trail the Reds, while Manchester United dropped points on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at home against newly promoted Wolves.

Arsenal and Tottenham are also hoping to be in the top four this season and Babb feels the pair are fighting with Manchester United for fourth, as he can see little stopping Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City from occupying the top three positions.

"From what I've seen, the three strongest teams are where they should be, and that's Liverpool, City and Chelsea", Babb said on LFC TV.

"I think it's going to be a great fight between them, not a runaway title like last year.

"Then you've got good teams challenging for fourth – Man United, Tottenham; Arsenal will come back into the picture.

"But for me the [title race] is a three-horse race", the former Ireland international concluded.

Liverpool have 18 points from their six league games so far, while Chelsea have 15 from five and can draw level with the Reds by beating West Ham on Sunday; Manchester City have 16 points from six games.

Babb's fourth place contenders, Manchester United (ten points), Tottenham (12 points) and Arsenal (nine points), have already lost ground on the top three sides
