Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that the EFL Cup tie against Derby County will be a good test for youngster Diogo Dalot, which will assist in his development and prepare him for the top flight.

The summer signing impressed on his debut against Young Boys in the Champions League last week.

Dalot though was not included in the squad for the Wolverhampton Wanderers game at the weekend, with the Portuguese confirming that he would select the player to feature against the Rams in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

And ahead of the match, Mourinho took time to stress the importance for the starlet to feature in such English competitions, which will prepare a player for the future.

The teenager has featured for the Under-23 side twice during the course of his recovery from a knee injury, though Mourinho insists that the Derby tie will be a different ball game in front of huge home crowd.

“He has played there but with an empty stadium”, Mourinho told his club's official website.

“He played in the Under-23s, now he plays in the first team.

“Obviously people liked what they saw in the match against Young Boys.

"This is an English competition, the different salt and pepper that English competitions have and I think it is good for him, for his development, for him to be ready for the top flight as soon as possible.“

The Red Devils will be eager to bounce back after the disappointment of the 1-1 draw against Wolves on Saturday.
