Former Celtic shot-stopper Alan Rough says that he feels Brendan Rodgers is trying to send messages that suggest he is not at fault for the Bhoys’ poor start to the season with certain comments.

The Bhoys suffered a 2-1 loss against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday and have slipped down to sixth place in the Scottish Premiership table with the result.

Rodgers endured a sticky spell last month when Celtic failed to secure a Champions League group stage berth following their loss to AEK Athens, but the win over Rangers quietened the criticism.

Celtic’s inability to strengthen their squad, ahead of the current season, in the summer coupled with the departures of Moussa Dembele and Stuart Armstrong raised eyebrows and their recent run of form has not helped their case.

The manager commented that there are reasons for Celtic fans to be alarmed at this point in time, but Rough feels that Rodgers is trying to send out a message that suggests he is not at fault for the club’s poor run of form.

“Yes, there seems to be a lot of possession of the ball, a bit of European style football”, Rough said on PLZ Soccer.

“But I think he touched on it himself that a lot of teams are now caught onto that, you know, have the ball at the halfway line, pass yourself as much as you like.

“You know we’ll just wait until you get to the dangerous bit and we know that the firepower is not there now the way it was in previous years.

“But for me, all the statements he has thrown out he is sending out messages that says ‘This isn’t my fault’ and that’s the message I get”, he added.

Celtic will be aiming to secure a win over St Johnstone in their Scottish League Cup quarter-final tie on Wednesday to get back to winning ways.
