Chelsea legend Pat Nevin has claimed that Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas still has a vital role to play under Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge this season, especially when it comes to breaking down teams that sit back against them.

Fabregas, who is yet to start a single game for Chelsea under Sarri this season, remained an unused substitute during their disappointing 0-0 draw against West Ham on Sunday.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men made life difficult for the visitors when they opted to sit back and put bodies behind the ball as the Blues struggled to break down a resolute backline on a frustrating afternoon in east London.

Chelsea looked jaded, with some feeling it could be due to their delayed flight back to London from Greece, and struggled to find an opening despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession.

Nevin, who was a central figure at Chelsea during his time at Stamford Bridge, claimed that the Blues could use Fabregas in such games to try and dismantle defensive lines with his incisive passing.

“Cesc has a world-class ability to ‘pick locks’ and crack the defences of deep-lying teams with his incredible vision and inch-perfect passing”, Nevin wrote in his column for the club’s official website.

“I am sure quite a few Chelsea fans had those thoughts crossing their minds, but there is the knowledge that Cesc and his talents are ready, willing and able again now after his injury.

“I suspect he will be needed regularly in our side. With this style of play and the defensive styles that teams are now choosing against us, he will be vital."

Fabregas will be hoping to feature for Chelsea when they visit Anfield to face Liverpool in the third round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
