Lou Macari has admitted that a lot needs to change if Manchester United are to stop drifting away from the top teams in England this season.

A 1-1 draw at home against Wolves reopened the can of worms at Old Trafford at the weekend and the situation only exacerbated when Derby knocked them out of the EFL Cup last night.

Despite registering an early strike, Manchester United produced a lethargic performance at home and needed Marouane Fellaini’s injury-time goal to push the game into penalties, which they lost.

Mourinho conceded that after the game that his team failed to match Derby’s intensity but Macari believes that shouldn’t be an excuse for any Manchester United player or team.

He admits that a number of changes need to happen quickly if Manchester United are to stem the rot and not allow the season to drift away.

Macari said on MUTV’s Matchday Review Programme: “No excuses for a lack of energy, it should be with any player and certainly with a Manchester United player.

“The game here is about being energetic, pressing and entertaining the supporters and that hasn’t been evident here in most weeks, which has got to change.

“A lot of things have got to change.

“We are drifting away from the teams at the top of the Premier League, week-after-week.”

Manchester United will look to stem the rot when they travel to London to take on West Ham at the weekend.
