Rangers manager Steven Gerrard says his wide players need to make sure they show the same work ethic as the other players throughout the team.

The Gers cruised to a convincing 5-1 win over St Johnstone on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership and moved up to second place in the table above Hibernian and Livingston on goal difference.

Gerrard’s men never looked like being under pressure as they cruised to a two-goal advantage by the end of the first half and added three more in the second as the visitors provided little resistance.

Rangers picked up from where they left off against Villarreal on Thursday night, where they had grabbed a crucial point away from home in their Europa League opener at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

Gerrard demands that his players work hard and put in a big shift, and he will not make exceptions for winger.

He also added that the club have had some fantastic wingers in their history and insisted that the current crop of players should take up the mantle and preserve the reputation.

“This club, over the years with the history, has always produced fantastic wingers and has always had good combinations out wide to get the fans on the edge of their seats”, Gerrard told Rangers TV.

“That was certainly a plan of ours as a staff – we want exciting wingers, we want to be creative out wide and we also want to put good service and delivery into the box.

“If we can get that from all our players in possession and if we can get that creativity and that balance I am sure it will work for us.

“But at the same time, for me and for this team, you also have to do it out of possession.

“So when we haven’t got the ball, we have to work hard, we have to hunt it down and you have to buy in to the work ethic throughout the team.

“You can’t just have it for defenders and central players”, he added.

Rangers will now be aiming to secure their berth in the semi-final of the Scottish League Cup when they face Ayr United at Ibrox tonight.
