Former Scotland international Michael Stewart is convinced that Aston Villa's John McGinn will be playing Premier League football next season.

It had been thought McGinn would join Scottish champions Celtic from Hibernian, but Aston Villa won the race for his signature to take him to the English Championship.

The midfielder has taken to football at Villa Park like a duck to water and has won praise for his high intensity performances and goal threat.

Former Scotland midfielder Stewart does not think McGinn will be in England's second tier for long as he is sure if Villa do not win promotion then the player will be bought by a Premier League club.

Stewart said on BT Sport: "He'll be in the Premier League next year, either with Villa going up or somebody will buy him."

McGinn has so far made eight appearances in the Championship for Aston Villa, scoring one goal and providing two assists for his team-mates.

The 23-year-old is locked down on a contract at Villa Park until the summer of 2022.

He scored a stunning goal for Steve Bruce's men in Villa's last Championship game, a 2-1 defeat at home against Sheffield Wednesday.
