Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has told his players that they have to show the hunger and desire to succeed if they are to feature regularly for the Gers this season.

The Gers climbed to second in the table with a 5-1 win over St Johnstone at Ibrox on Sunday and have impressed under the tutelage of Gerrard so far this season.

The resurgence under the new manager is something that all associated with Rangers have welcomed with open arms and for many with every passing game the Old Firm giants are starting to show more promise.

Gerrard has tasted defeat just once so far this season, against Celtic in the derby, but in a stroke of luck for the Gers, the defending champions have had a poor start to their season.

The former Liverpool captain was quick to point out that hunger and desire are crucial attributes for the players in the squad if they are to feature regularly for Rangers this season.

“I have mentioned the word ‘hunger’ before, and ‘ruthless’ and ‘relentless’ are words that are going to keep coming up because that is what the standards of this club require”, Gerrard told Rangers TV.

“If you want to play here, you have to be hungry.

"During games, you can’t take your foot off the gas – you have to keep going for it”, he added.

Rangers will now face Ayr United in the quarter-final of the Scottish League Cup this evening.
