RB Leipzig head of recruitment and development Paul Mitchell has emerged as the favourite to become the director of football at Manchester United.

The 37-year-old Englishman is considered one of the top talent-spotters in Europe and he earned great reviews for his work at Southampton and Tottenham.

He was the head of recruitment at Tottenham and helped the club to spot and sign players such as Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld.

Mitchell left Tottenham in March 2017 and has been the head of recruitment at RB Leipzig since February this year but it seems the German club could lose him soon.

According to German daily Bild, Mitchell is the top choice at Manchester United to become the club’s first director of football and the 37-year-old is expected to take up the offer.

Born in Manchester, the director of football role at Old Trafford is claimed to be Mitchell's dream job and he is at the top of the club’s shortlist of candidates.

Atletico Madrid’s Andrea Berta and Roma’s Monchi are also said to be on Manchester United’s radar as they seek to bring in a director of football by the end of the year.

There are also suggestions that RB Leipzig coach Ralf Rangnick blamed Mitchell and the recruitment team for not identifying a replacement for Ademola Lookman in the summer.
