Steven Gerrard has challenged Jordan Rossiter to stay fit and make his way back into the Rangers team in the coming weeks.

The 21-year-old midfielder missed the start of the season due to a calf injury he picked up during pre-season and was out for the first few months of Rangers’ campaign.

The midfielder made a comeback into the team when he played a little more than half-an-hour in Rangers’ 4-0 win over Ayr United in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

Gerrard conceded that it was unfortunate for Rossiter to get injured during pre-season as he was playing well at that moment and admits that he is still a few weeks away from being at his peak fitness.

“We want every player healthy”, the Rangers boss said in a press conference when asked about Rossiter’s recovery.

“Jordan was flying in pre-season and then got an injury. We are desperate to get him back and he has to get back to match-fitness.

“He is probably still a couple of weeks away.”

The Liverpool legend lauded the mental fortitude the former Reds midfielder showed during his rehabilitation process, but insisted that the onus is on the player now to remain fit and force his way back into the team.

“Rossiter has shown great mental toughness in his recovery from injury. Everyone wants it for Jordan but no-one more than him.

“He has to stay fit and force himself back into the squad.”
