Former Premier League winner Chris Sutton has insisted that the Manchester United board have no reason whatsoever to trust Jose Mourinho to spend wisely during the January transfer window.

The Red Devils suffered their fourth defeat in the Premier League this season following the 3-1 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Manchester United seemed to have turned a corner after back-to-back comeback wins over both Bournemouth and Juventus in recent weeks, but the loss to their rivals will have certainly left a bad taste in the mouth.

The gulf in class between both sides became evident as the game progressed and Manchester United looked like a shadow of their former selves that finished second, only behind Manchester City, last season.

Mourinho has been unhappy with how he has been backed in the transfer market, but it remains to be seen whether they will back him in January.

Sutton, who won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers, insisted that Manchester United have no reason to back Mourinho in the winter transfer window since the majority of his signings have flattered to deceive at Old Trafford.

"Mourinho has been banging on about money but is United's form this season acceptable on the back of last year?", Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 live.

"He's been talking about how much City have spent but they have to catch Watford and Bournemouth first.

"And when you look at the signings he has made, how many have actually been a success?

"Has he spent the money well? I don't think so.

"Why should the United board trust him to spend well in January?"

Manchester United spent over £65m on Fred and Diogo Dalot during the summer transfer window ahead of the ongoing season.
