Sunderland boss Jack Ross believes that summer signing Luke O'Nien has responded well to the way the Black Cats have tried to manage and coach him.

The 24-year-old joined the Black Cats in late July, but has not been able to feature prominently for Ross' side, mostly appearing from the bench.

However with key first-teamers such as Lee Cattermole and Dylan McGeouch being absent, the Watford academy recruit has been amongst the manager's plans, going on to impress with his performances.

Ross insists that there are some players who settle down at a new team easily, while some take time. For O'Nien the transition from Wycombe Wanderers has been huge as he had to change his club after three years, Ross feels.

But the Sunderland boss says player has taken it all in his stride, listening to all the advice and backing the effort put into him by playing well.

"You get players who settle right away, others take longer", Ross said at a press conference.

"It has been a big change for Luke O'Nien, so we’ve tried to manage and coach him in the right way.

"That’s been backed up by his performances and he’s a real part of the squad."

O'Nien has 16 appearances to his name, scoring two goals.
