Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has warned rivals Arsenal that Spurs have good momentum heading into the first north London derby of the season on Sunday at the Emirates.

Vertonghen played the entirety of Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Inter in the Champions League on Wednesday after returning to action for the first time since recovering from a hamstring injury.

The Belgian missed 10 games across all competitions for the north Londoners after he suffered the injury during the win over Huddersfield Town in September, but he is now fit and raring to go.

Despite enduring a lengthy layoff due to injury, Vertonghen looked comfortable at the heart of Tottenham’s defence alongside Toby Alderweireld as the duo worked in tandem to keep Mauro Icardi and co. at bay.

However, they will have to replicate the same form during the trip to the Emirates on Sunday when they face city rivals Arsenal in the north London derby.

Vertonghen, who is expected to feature yet again on Sunday, issued a warning to Arsenal by suggesting that Spurs have good momentum heading into the game after registering wins over Chelsea and Inter in their last two outings.

“We have momentum”, Vertonghen told the club’s official website.

“It’s not easy to keep that momentum after the international break but we’ve done that.

"The wins against Chelsea and Inter have definitely helped.

“It's important that we go to Arsenal with another win under our belts and we’re getting back to our best form now.”

Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat during the corresponding fixture last season after goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez helped Arsenal secure bragging rights on the night.
