West Ham striker Javier Hernandez has expressed his delight at getting an opportunity to start and make an impact in his side’s 3-0 win over Newcastle United.

Hernandez scored a brace in West Ham’s win at St. James’ Park as West Ham took three points from their trip to the north east of England.

The striker looked dangerous throughout the game and could have scored more than just two as West Ham missed a few opportunities to put the game to bed early.

Hernandez is happy with the win and believes getting the first goal was crucial to West Ham eventually bagging three points in a comfortable victory.

He told Sky Sports: "We are very happy. We wanted to come here and get three points.

“The important thing is that we scored first.

"We scored three and could have got more. We created chances and got the clean sheet.”

The 30-year-old made only his third league start of the season, but is pleased that his patience has paid off as he believes he has looked good in training in recent weeks.

And Hernandez is feeling confident and believes that was a key reason for his performance against Newcastle.

"I know I am doing well on the training ground.

"I have been patient.

"In this world when you have confidence it is easier to perform like I did today.

"I missed two but we did a good job, my team-mates.

"We have a big squad, with people waiting for an opportunity.

"We have another opportunity at home next up."

Next up for West Ham is a visit from Cardiff City on Tuesday.
