Sunderland manager Jack Ross says that Black Cats winger Aiden McGeady is a top, top player when he is fit and ready to play at his optimum level.

McGeady, who joined Sunderland in the summer of 2017, was unable to prevent the Black Cats from being relegated to League One at the end of last season.

Furthermore, a calf injury sustained by the winger in the summer meant that he missed the majority of pre-season with Sunderland this term, while becoming a forgotten man at the Stadium of Light early on in the new campaign.

However, McGeady has worked hard to get back to his best shape and is now fit and functioning at his optimum level on Wearside.

The 32-year-old has netted five goals in his last five appearances in League One, while also providing two assists for his team-mates during that time.

Ross, who came up against McGeady during their playing days in Scotland, thinks that the Republic of Ireland international is a top class player when he is fully fit.

The Sunderland boss also admitted he is enjoying working with McGeady at the Stadium of Light and reiterated that he is a huge asset to the club.

“Aiden’s bright. He cares a lot about his football. He’ll challenge you in terms of what you do, but I like that”, Ross was quoted as saying by the Northern Echo.

“I enjoyed working with him, even before I got him on the training pitch, and we knew that once we got him right in terms of his injury, he’d be a massive asset to us.

“He’s shown that. I think he’s enjoying it.

“He just loves playing football and he’s enjoying his football at the moment.

“When he’s fit and he feels well, he’s a top, top player. Long may that continue.”

Sunderland will next face Walsall in the second round of the FA Cup today at the Bescot Stadium.
