Nottingham Forest legend Kenny Burns feels Reds boss Aitor Karanka should not recall defender Joe Worrall from his loan spell at Rangers in the January transfer window.

Karanka’s defensive resources at Nottingham Forest may become stretched after Michael Dawson hobbled off the pitch before the final whistle against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

With a busy fixtures list coming up, the club will hope Dawson’s injury is not a serious one as the club are already without Tobias Figueiredo, who is suspended for two more games, while Danny Fox is still recovering from a foot injury.

Steven Gerrard has options to choose from at Rangers, but Worrall has been handed regular game time.

Burns feels recalling Worrall may hamper his development as the 21-year old’s playing time could reduce substantially when all the Nottingham Forest defenders are back in the first team fold.

“Aitor Karanka could be really short of centre-back options for Nottingham Forest’s game against Preston on Saturday”, Burns wrote in his column for the Nottingham Post.

“But I still don’t think we should be looking into possibly bringing Joe Worrall back in January.

"He’s better off staying on loan at Rangers.

“He’ll learn more up there, working for Steven Gerrard and playing in the kind of matches he has been doing, than he would if he’d stayed at Forest this year.

“If you bring Joe back and Fox and Dawson end up not being out for too long, then all of a sudden he’s back to barely playing again."

Worrall has done well in his loan spell with Rangers so far, having made 12 appearances in all competitions for the Gers.
