AC Milan have cooled their interest in defender Andreas Christensen after it became clear Chelsea are not ready to play ball in January.

The 22-year-old defender was on AC Milan’s short list of targets for the winter transfer window as the club plan to bring in mid-season defensive reinforcements.

However, Chelsea have reportedly ruled out selling the centre-back as Maurizio Sarri is not interested in weakening his squad in the middle of the campaign.

Christensen is yet to play a minute of Premier League football this season and has been angling to leave, but Chelsea are not prepared to sell as it could affect their numbers at the back in the second half of the season.

AC Milan have taken note of the message from Chelsea and according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, they are gradually walking away from the plan to sign the Dane in January.

The Rossoneri are not keen to take up the difficult task of convincing Chelsea and are prepared to look at other defensive options.

AC Milan are also happy with the progress of Alessio Romagnoli, who has been recovering from a calf injury.

Christensen has a contract until 2022 with the west Londoners.
