Rangers development squad coach Graeme Murty has lauded Borna Barisic’s ability and believes the Croatian needed the playing time with the Under-20s side on Monday.

Barisic featured for 45 minutes as Rangers ran out comfortable 5-0 win against Kilmarnock to stretch their lead at the top of the SPFL Reserve League to five points.

The 26-year old has not featured for the Rangers senior side since the defeat against Livingston in late September as he suffered a calf injury.

Barisic was a regular up until then and will hope to return to the first team fold and help Rangers in the coming weeks.

Murty says the left-back showed his quality on the pitch, telling his club's official site: “Borna needed to get back and he gave us 45 minutes – and you can see the quality the guy has got."

“He has a wonderful left foot and good range, and the other guys came in similarly and got out of the game what they needed which was good for us and it is good for my players to go and see that level of player, that level of approach and that level of professionalism as they all want to be there."

Steven Gerrard’s side have a busy December period and Barisic’s availability will give the manager more options.

Andy Halliday has been used in a makeshift left-back role, while Jon Flanagan has been another option for Gerrard; Lee Wallace remains out of the picture.
