Rangers defender Joe Worrall has revealed Steven Gerrard still shows his footballing ability on the ball in training with the squad.

Gerrard has earned widespread praise for his work at Rangers, his first job in football management, this season and has been tipped to get the Gers back challenging Celtic.

The former Liverpool midfielder’s career as a footballer remains a topic of admiration for many young players and Worrall admits that his current manager was his footballing hero growing up.

The defender lavished praise on Gerrard the man and admits that the Rangers boss does not shy away from showing glimpses of his talent to his squad in training from time to time.

Asked to name his footballing hero, the 21-year-old said on Rangers TV: “Probably Steven Gerrard. Watching him play while I was young, he was an unbelievable footballer.

“They say never meet your heroes, but he is a top guy as well.

He has still got a bit in training when he straps the boots on and sprays a few passes.

"He has still got it.”

Worrall also insisted that despite the Rangers manager’s stellar playing career, Gerrard remains a very approachable and humble man behind the scenes at Ibrox.

“When I spoke to him on the phone, I probably thought it was a prank call.

“He is a nice man as well. He is not a big time.

“For what he has done in his career, he is a nice and humble man.”

Gerrard is looking to make sure Rangers sustain a title challenge in Scotland this season and manage to progress to the last 32 of the Europa League.
