Chelsea defender David Luiz has admitted that the life of a defender and a goalkeeper is much harder when compared to a striker if the team lose a game.

The Blues were heavily criticised for conceding three goals against Tottenham Hotspur and for failing to stop a Wolves team that came from behind to win 2-1 on Wednesday night in the Premier League.

Chelsea bounced back with a 2-0 win against Manchester City on Saturday evening as Maurizio Sarri’s side became the first team to beat the reigning champions in the league this season.

Luiz admitted that the nature of the game means the defenders and the goalkeepers get all the blame as one mistake can cost the team a goal, but strikers do not face the same level of criticism.

“You win, everything is good. If you lose, it’s your fault, especially the defenders and the goalkeepers”, Luiz said on Chelsea TV.

“Strikers never lose games. We have to be honest and say that.

“We have to accept that in the right way, in the nice way, in the intelligent way and I think we did that because we are doing an amazing job since the beginning and we are working a lot.

“So it was good to play against a fantastic team and keep a clean sheet.”

With the win, Chelsea are seven points behind Manchester City, who dropped to second place in the Premier League table.

Sarri’s side have a hectic run of games coming up as they will play four times in nine days, starting with a Europa League clash against Vidi FC on Thursday.
