Former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson feels the time has come for Alfredo Morelos’ team-mates to help him keep his calm on the pitch, with the task not just down to boss Steven Gerrard.

Morelos has struggled to keep his emotions in check and has been sent off twice in the Scottish Premiership already this season, most recently against Aberdeen last week.

Rangers eventually lost the game 1-0 and the red card meant the Gers were without him for their 1-1 draw at Dundee on Sunday.

The Gers have scored more goals than any other side this season in the league this term, but have relied heavily on Morelos in the final third.

The Colombian has netted nine goals for Steve Gerrard’s side so far this season.

And Rangers legend Ferguson believes it is now up to the more senior players on the pitch to calm Morelos as they cannot afford to lose him due to suspension.

“It comes to a stage where it’s not just about the manager and the coaching staff”, Ferguson said on PLZ Soccer.

“I think some of the more experienced players need to put an arm around him and let him know that ‘we need you on the park for 90 minutes’ because he is a big player for Rangers, there is no doubt.

“When he first came in I wasn’t sure about him.

"But this season, he looks fitter and he looks better to me and he’s one of Rangers’ main players.”

Gerrard’s side needed Kyle Lafferty to lead the line at Dens Park on Sunday, as they came up short and were forced to settle for a draw.
