Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has revealed that he misses playing for the Gunners, with whom he had a five-year spell before moving to Barcelona.

Vermaelen was plagued by injuries after he joined Barcelona and has made just 45 appearances for the club since leaving Arsenal.

The 33-year old has played in just two La Liga games for the Blaugrana this season and was on the bench against Espanyol during Barcelona’s 4-0 win on Saturday.

The Belgian international has several international team-mates playing for Barcelona’s upcoming opponents in the Champions League, Tottenham Hotspur, and admitted that he misses playing for Arsenal ahead of his side's clash with the Lilywhites.

"I saw the last derby and you can see the atmosphere, how much it means every time, it was unbelievable”, Vermaelen told news agency AFP.

"I was really happy to be there for five years, I miss it.

"When I see the stadium and them doing well, I have good memories."

Vermaelen made 150 appearances for Arsenal, more than any other club he has played for, and chipped in with 15 goals along the way.

The former Ajax defender will hope to get some playing time when Barcelona take on Tottenham in their final Champions League group game on Tuesday night.
