Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has insisted that Liverpool can frighten Manchester City and even ask a few questions of the defending champions in the title race this season.

Manchester City’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an end on Saturday at Stamford Bridge when they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea.

The result meant that Pep Guardiola’s men slipped to second in the league table after Liverpool had secured an emphatic 4-0 win over Bournemouth, courtesy of a hat-trick from Mohamed Salah.

The busy festive season schedule coming up promises to blow the title race wide open as Liverpool aim to win their first Premier League trophy by usurping the defending champions.

Burley, who started his senior career at Stamford Bridge, insisted that Liverpool can frighten Manchester City and even ask a few questions in the title race this season.

“I’ve seen Pep Guardiola quoted as saying, ‘what frightens you?’ and he says, ‘Jurgen Klopp’ and Liverpool can frighten Man City”, Burley said ESPN FC.

“City have the better squad and results over the past couple of years have proven that, but Liverpool can frighten City and if you can frighten a team and you can pressure a team, like they did in the Champions League last year, you can start seeing some cracks.

“And if you start seeing some cracks and you start putting the pressure on, mindsets can change and I think the one thing Liverpool are doing, that is certainly asking questions at the moment of Man City, [and] we are going to go into a very busy period.

“We all know about Christmas, new year and Boxing Day and all the fixtures, and Liverpool they need to keep going and ask City questions.”

Liverpool are now the only team in the Premier League, who are still unbeaten after 16 games so far this season.
