Liverpool would need to offer Borussia Monchengladbach substantially more than €30m if they want to land Thorgan Hazard next month, it has been claimed in Germany.

The Reds have been linked with a January swoop to take Hazard to Anfield, but it is not clear whether Jurgen Klopp is preparing to pull the bid trigger.

An offer of €30m has been mooted but, according to German daily the Rheinische Post, Liverpool would have to pay much more if they are to land Hazard in the new year.

While there has been talk of a €30m release clause in Hazard's contract, there is no concrete evidence it exists and Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl would need a much higher sum to be able to justify the sale to the fans.

Gladbach count Hazard as a key man and view him as vital in the second half of the season, with the club already dreaming of qualifying for next term's Champions League.

Hazard has helped power Gladbach to second place in the Bundesliga, two points ahead of Bayern Munich, and a top four finish is what is being aimed for at Borussia-Park.

Selling Hazard could do genuine damage to the club's hopes of maintaining their lofty position in the Bundesliga.

The 25-year-old has netted eleven goals in all competitions for Gladbach so far, while chipping in with seven assists.
