Celtic legend Chris Sutton has hailed Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk after the Reds reached the last 16 of the Champions League and feels it should not be forgotten that he was developed at Parkhead.

Van Dijk has gone from strength to strength since joining Liverpool from Southampton and is now considered by some to be the best central defender in the Premier League.

He was again on song on Tuesday night as he helped Liverpool beat Napoli 1-0 at Anfield and reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Sutton thinks Van Dijk's performance levels are of the highest quality and stressed the role Celtic played in his development should not be overlooked.

He wrote on Twitter: "Virgil is verging on the ridiculous with his level of performance.

"People forget he was developed at Celtic and Neil Lennon signed him for just £2m", Sutton added.

Van Dijk has still made more appearances for Celtic than he has managed at any of his other clubs, with 115 games clocked up for the Bhoys across all competitions.

The 27-year-old is closing in on the 50-game mark for Liverpool and the outing against Napoli was his 43rd in a red shirt.
