Former Manchester United defender David May feels that Jose Mourinho’s forwards will make more attacking runs into the penalty box as they play with Diogo Dalot more often.

The 19-year-old full-back earned praise for his performance at right-back in Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday.

He was diligent in defence, but what caught the eye of many about his performance was his ability to put in good crosses from the right-flank, something the Manchester United side have been missing.

The forwards were still getting used to Dalot’s early deliveries and often did not anticipate several of the delicious balls he put in.

But May is certain once players such as Romelu Lukaku and others play more often with the Portuguese, they will make more decisive runs expecting deliveries from Dalot.

The former defender said on MUTV: “What he does do is that he is not afraid to put the ball into certain areas and he is quick as well.

“He delivers as well and eventually Lukaku will understand his delivery.

"I remember Becks [David Beckham] putting in the ball whenever he could and eventually the forwards know that it’s going to come rather than waiting.

“With [Antonio] Valencia on the right-hand side, you don’t know whether you should go near or far post or whether it’s coming in.

“Eventually they will get an understanding and when he is on the flank, the forwards will start making those runs inside the box.”

May admits that Manchester United have been crying out for a natural attacking right-back such as Dalot since club legend Gary Neville retired nearly a decade ago.

“He’s something we have been crying out for since Gaz left in right-back.

“He’s a natural right-back, rather than playing Ashley [Young] or Valencia there.”
