Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie believes it is impossible to predict what Manchester United side will turn up at Anfield, but is sure the Reds are catching the Red Devils at the right time.

Jurgen Klopp’s men return to action in the Premier League when they host rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday as they aim extend their stay at the top of the table.

The Reds navigated their way through a tricky group in the Champions League in midweek following their 1-0 defeat of Napoli and will head into the game with a spring in their step.

However, the meeting with Manchester United always brings with it rivalry between both sides and Liverpool will know that they cannot afford to take the Red Devils lightly, despite their inconsistent form so far this term.

Gillespie does not know which Manchester United side will turn up, but knows it remains a massive match.

“It's difficult to know [what Manchester United will turn up] with the way that they are performing at the moment”, Gillespie said on LFC TV after the Napoli game.

“I think they are a little bit under pressure, the players and manager.

"It is always a massive game when you play Manchester United."

Gillespie also suggested that it is the ideal time to tackle a game of such intensity both on and off the pitch, especially considering Liverpool's hard-fought win over Napoli on Tuesday.

“It is probably the best time to catch them after a game like this [against Napoli] because you know your players are going to be up for this.

“It is easier to motivate them for a game against Manchester United. So in that respect it is a plus that we are playing them.

“Since I've been working for LFC TV and doing commentary, there's not many times we've gone into a game [like that] as strong favourites.

“Certainly on Sunday we are strong favourites to win the game.”

Liverpool are the only unbeaten side in the Premier League after securing 42 points from a possible 48 so far this season.
