Rangers Under-20s manager Graeme Murty has explained why his coaching staff do not provide too much information on the opposition to the players present within his squad.

Murty’s Under-20s team will lock horns with Rapid Vienna ahead of the first team’s do-or-die Europa League meeting against the hosts in Vienna today.

However, the Gers’ reserve team coach has revealed that his team do not have any information on their opponents ahead of their trip to Vienna.

Furthermore, Murty explained why his coaching staff do not provide too much information on the opponents to their players ahead of games like the one in Austria.

The former Scotland defender has stated the reason behind the lack of a briefing to his players as something they do in order to cultivate critical thinkers and good communicators on the pitch.

Murty also insisted that his role as a coach is to pose problems to the players so as to make them seek solutions for it rather than just giving them the answers to the challenges.

“We don’t know anything about it [Rapid Vienna’s youth system]”, Murty said on Rangers TV.

“We try not to give the guys too much information before we start, because we like them to figure out the problems on the pitch.

“I think I’m in this role to pose them problems, to help them find solutions but not to give them the answers.

“We have to have critical thinkers on the pitch, we have to have people who solve problems on the pitch, we have to have people who learn how to communicate on the pitch and these guys are trying to do that."

Murty also admitted that it is difficult to put kids in tough situations, but conceded that if they don’t do it, then they are sort of curtailing their development to an extent.

“It’s hard for the coaches because we want to solve all the problems for them, because we actually like the kids and when we spend a lot of time with them, we want to solve all the problems for them.

“But, by doing that we are kind of hamstringing them a little bit as well.

"So we make sure that we moderate our input and we want it to come from them.”

Murty has had spells as the caretaker boss of the first team at Rangers..
