Steve McMahon believes Liverpool are now miles ahead of rivals Manchester United, as the two sides prepare to do battle in the league this coming weekend.

Jurgen Klopp's side and Jose Mourinho's men will step out at Anfield to lock horns in a crucial Premier League encounter on Sunday.

Liverpool sit a whopping 16 points ahead of Manchester United in the league standings and the Reds are widely considered to be title contenders, while Manchester United scrap for the top four.

The Reds, who are yet to taste defeat in the Premier League this term, will look to hammer home their superiority this weekend.

McMahon, who made over 200 appearances in the league for Liverpool, now firmly believes that the Merseyside giants are miles ahead of the Red Devils.

“We are way past United at this stage”, McMahon said on LFC TV after the midweek Champions League game.

“United have fallen so below their standards and we have gone above where I think we should be in this short period of time.

“There is miles of difference between Liverpool and Manchester United.

“We are now head and shoulders above Manchester United and we should take the game to them, while being patient.

“The atmosphere and the game will be different, but we are favourites.”

Manchester United have registered just a single win during their last five games in the Premier League, while Liverpool have won all five games during that time.
