Rangers legend Derek Johnstone is keen for the Gers' to re-sign Steven Davis, who could be on the move from Southampton and whose contract expires in the summer.

Davis made 200 appearances for Rangers and was a key player for the team before moving south of the border to Southampton in 2012.

Rangers have suffered from an indifferent run of form in the last couple of weeks as they have slipped to second in the Scottish Premiership table after briefly leading the rest of the teams, and were ousted from the Europa League on Thursday.

Johnstone feels the presence of someone authoritative in midfield would help the team when the going gets tough and has admitted he wants Davis back.

“We need a leader. I would like to see Steven Davis come back, plus another striker is a must”, Johnstone wrote in his column for the Evening Times.

“I hate to look back, but in my day I had John Greig, Tam Forsyth and Sandy Jardine who would let any of us if we weren’t at it. Today’s Rangers team could do with a Greigy.

“A problem is that there aren’t many John Greigs about, just like there are no spare Steven Gerrards."

The Gers host Hamilton in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday and the clash is the first of five games Rangers will have to play in two weeks.

The Gers are currently two points behind Premiership leaders Celtic and have played a game more than the Hoops; Steven Gerrard’s side will be desperate not to see the gap grow.
