Leeds United youngster Jack Clarke has impressed former Whites attacker Noel Whelan with his game intelligence, which the ex-forward thinks stands out amongst his other attributes.

Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa has been using the 18-year-old as an option from the bench in recent games and he was introduced at half time in Leeds' 1-0 win at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

He impressed Whelan, who feels that Clarke always appears to make the right decisions in games.

Whelan also thinks that the teenager's intelligence in matches is a big attribute and helps to make the most of his other qualities.

He said on BBC Radio Leeds after the game: "When he came on, everyone seemed to get that lift and that buzz.

"He is quite direct, he's got pace, he's got skill.

"But he is also intelligent with his football.

"That is the key bit.

"He is very intelligent. He doesn't rush a pass, he doesn't run down blind alleys, he always picks the right pass to the players", Whelan added.

And the former White believes that Clarke has been a breath of fresh air for the Yorkshire giants.

"We've not seen too many players this season that young come in and make such an impression.

"It's not just on the fans, but on the pitch as well and it's a breath of fresh air."

Leeds have Clarke under contract until the summer of 2021, but already there are calls from some quarters for the winger to be handed a new deal in appreciation of his breakthrough into the first team set-up.
