Ronald de Boer insists that the Rangers board, along with director of football Mark Allen, deserve huge credit for appointing Steven Gerrard as manager at Ibrox in the summer.

The Old Firm giants opted to provide Gerrard with his first step into senior management when they offered him a four-year contract to take over at Ibrox.

Rangers have come on leaps and bounds under the tutelage of Gerrard and are still in the race for the Scottish Premiership title, while also conjuring a spirited performance throughout their European campaign, despite failing to make it to the knockout stage of the Europa League.

The board of directors at Ibrox took a gamble by appointing Gerrard in the summer, but De Boer thinks it is paying off.

De Boer, who won the domestic treble at Ibrox in 2003, thinks that the Rangers board and Allen, who works as the director of football at Ibrox, deserve huge credit for appointing Gerrard as manager.

“They have a great manager”, De Boer was quoted as saying by the Evening Times.

“The board and technical director should be complimented for the appointing Steven Gerrard as manager.

“He is such a big name.

"Immediately, people looking at the club from outside think: ‘Rangers is a serious club and must be taken seriously again’.

“That is great for the fans."

De Boer also feels Gerrard has Rangers on the right path.

“They are doing better with a young team.

"That takes a little bit of time. But I feel they are on the right tracks.”

Rangers will be looking to make sure they head into the winter break without touching distance of Celtic.
